How to Start a Money Making Personal Finance Blog in 10 Minutes
Have you thought about blogging? Maybe you want to explore your creative side, reach an audience, share your story, vent, or make money. Blogging can help you do all that and more. I started my journey blogging about 2 years (and six figures) ago. I’ve created nearly a dozen different blogs in various niches. I absolutely love it! Keep reading to learn how you can make your personal finance blog (or any niche) in just 10 minutes and make money doing it!
First things first, you begin with picking your niche. What will you blog about? Fashion, food, vacation, family adventures, couponing, etc. Pick a niche you are passionate about and blogging won’t feel like work. You’ll be more consistent and excited to work on it. Need more examples? Check out these 50+ profitable niches to get you started.
After you decide on your niche, it’s time to get brainstorming on your blog name and domain name.
Pick Your Blog Name and Domain Name
You would want both to match in a perfect world. So if your blog name is Becca’s Budget, you’d want your domain to be www. beccasbudget .com. Make sense? It doesn’t have to be a perfect match, but the closer the better. Make sure your domain name is not too long, no more than 4 words. Absolutely no physical numnbers (like 0, 1, 4, 27, etc.) and do special characters (like dash). Also, try to go for a .com. If not available, you can do a .net, .org, or .co domain name.
An easy way to check domain name availability is through GoDaddy. Type your domain name in the search bar and see if it’s available. It’s a free tool.
Go Professional with a Self Hosted Blog
Getting hosted is a breeze and a MUST if you want to have a professional-looking blog that makes gobs of money. A hosted blog looks like this…
www. beccasbudget .com
Compared to a blog not hosted, that looks like this..
www. beccasbudget.wordpress .com
Which one looks better? If you were a brand, which one would you wanna do business with?
I hope I sold you on hosting. It’s so important. Every single one of my blogs has been hosted. It’s very affordable and THE WAY to do it, if you wanna be a serious blogger. Ok, so, you start by finding a host. Bluehost is my recommendation!
With Bluehost, they have tons of extra cool perks in their packages and super affordable, starting at around $3.95/month.
Some of the perks include:
- Free domain with purchase of hosting
- Free domain email accounts
- Affordable hosting
- Many more perks..
Go with Shared Hosting…
Then, go with the basic package (I have done all 3)..
You will go through checkout to buy hosting, grab your free domain and then you’ll be taken to your cpanel where you can plug in WordPress.
Adding WordPress with 1-Click Installation
This is the easy part. Head over to the WordPress 1-click installation in your Bluehost cPanel and add WordPress. Simple! When you’re done, you can login to your WordPress blog backend dashboard. The web address will look like this..
www. beccasbudget .com/wp-admin
Making Your Blog Pretty and Profitable
You’ve done the techy part-getting Bluehost and checking out. You’ve done the easy part-WordPress 1-click install. Now, comes the fun part, making your blog pretty and profitable.
You make it pretty by adding a theme and customizing it to really make it your own. When designing your blog, think about your readers and think about what you like. A nice marriage between your wants and the reader’s needs will help you pick a great theme. There are plenty of free themes but if you want your blog to pop, nothing beats an affordable paid theme. My favorite: StudioPress
StudioPress comes with famous Genesis Framework. This framework is WHAT YOU NEED for your blog. When I first started blogging, I’d hear up and down about the Genesis Framework. I got it from the very beginning and StudioPress themes come with it.
What’s Genesis Framework?
It’s a framework for your blog (included with the theme) that helps you get more traffic and make more money. Here are some of the features:
- It is search engine optimized
- Responsive designs
- Unlimited support
- Airtight security
- Custom widgets
- Various layouts available
And StudioPress themes (again) come with the Genesis Framework!
